SimCategorizer in Virtual PC
by Elizabeth

Step 1:
Make sure you have Virtual PC installed with one of the operating systems that is supported by SimCategorizer (my Virtual PC has Windows 98). Install SimCategorizer on your virtual PC hard drive following the install instructions at SimWardrobe. You will tell SimCategorizer where to look for the files to categorize, so you can install SimCategorizer anywhere on your virtual PC hard drives.

Step 2:
Set up a shared folder in Virtual PC that points to the folder on your Mac where you have The Sims installed. Make sure to check the "share every time" box when you set up the shared folder.

Step 3:
You have two choices now. You can use SimCategorizer directly on your downloaded object files on your Mac, or you can copy the downloaded object files to the virtual PC and categorize them there. If you want to categorize the files on your Mac, skip to Step #. Otherwise, continue to Step 4.

Step 4:
Create a directory on the VPC hard drive called TheSims

Step 5:
In TheSims create two more directories, one called GameData and one called Downloads

Step 6:
In GameData create two more directories, one called Objects amd one called UserObjects

Step 7:
Using the shared folder you set up in Step 2, find and copy over all your downloaded objects from your Mac. These files must go in either the Downloads directory created in Step 5, or in one of the directories created in Step 6.

Step 8:
In the folder where you want SimCategorizer to categorize objects (either the folder where The Sims is installed on your Mac, or TheSims directory that you created in Step 4), create an empty text file. Rename this file to sims.exe - the name is important because SimCategorizer checks for a file of that name in the directory in which you tell it to look for object files.

Step 9:
Run the program SimCategorizer. It will pop up a message saying it can't find where The Sims is installed. That's ok though, because SimCategorizer provides a way for us to tell it ourselves. Under the Options menu, choose Set Path. On the bottom text box (labeled "Location of The Sims used by SimCategorizer") click the Find button. Browse to find the right folder; you are looking for the folder where you created sims.exe in Step 8. Once you find the correct folder, click OK until you are back at the main SimCategorizer screen. Your object files should show up in the list (sorted by folder; click a folder in the list to see the object files in it) - if not, you may need to exit SimCategorizer and open it again for them to show up.

That's it. Happy categorizing :)
